- The star represents where I was anchored. As the eye passed over me the storm stalled, and the calm lasted for 2 hours and 40 minutes. The top wind gust measured at the ferry terminal, 15 miles away, was 115 MPH. It was a LONG night. (The small dark circle to the left of the star is not a very compact eye, but rather an echo of the radar facility).
- Ocracoke Lighthouse is the oldest operating lighthouse in North Carolina. It is also the second oldest continuously operating light on the East Coast. Ocracoke stands 65 feet tall, and it reaches 75 feet tall to the focal point of the center of the lens. One side of the lighthouse is more sloped than the other, and the lantern room that was built off-center. Nobody knows why it was built that way.
- Throughout the years, the waters off Ocracoke Island have witnessed the sinking of many ships. During the height of the German submarine campaign on May 14, 1942, the HMS Bedfordshire was torpedoed and sunk with all hands lost. Four bodies of the crew were subsequently found and buried on Ocracoke
- The 65-ft. red brick tower (c. 1827) is the oldest of its kind still standing in the US. It was replaced in 1857 by a 150-ft.-octagonal-shaped tower. The lantern room and lens, destroyed by Confederate troops in 1861, were replaced and remained in service until 1947.
- My brother Kenny and his better half Amy joined me for a few days for shelling and exploring at Cape Romain.
- Family: Tonnidae. Around 20 species exist worldwide. These shells are thin and light, but strong. The snail is actually larger than the shell it lives in. Tun shells are deep tropical water dwelling creatures that feed mainly on fish, crustaceans and sea urchins. Because their free-swimming larval life is quite lengthy they have been able to spread out over great distances. Interesting Facts: The name tun shell means cask shell or wine jar.
- Rich in nature and culture, the forested bluffs and deep, cypress studded creeks typical of Sandy Island have changed little with the passage of centuries. Located between the Waccamaw and Great Pee Dee Rivers near Georgetown, South Carolina, this is a place rich in wildlife habitats, including tidal freshwater forested wetlands, emergent marsh along blackwater and alluvial rivers, and a coastal maritime sandhill community that includes several thousand acres of old-growth longleaf pine.
- The historic seaport City of Georgetown, South Carolina’s third oldest city, boasts oak-lined avenues, riverfront shopping and dining, a scenic Harborwalk, dozens of majestic antebellum mansions, a rich history, and fabulous sunsets.
- Located east of Washington, on the banks of the Pamlico River, Goose Creek State Park covers 1,400 acres of natural beauty and marshlands. It is one of my favorite places to go and get away from it all.
- The view from Cape Lookout Bight. The Bight is about a 5 mile trip outside from Beaufort Inlet, and once inside, the 156′ tall lighthouse is an impressive sight.
